It is part of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo.<ref>Lei Complementar nº 1.139, de 16 de junho de 2011</ref> The population is 156,492 (2020 est.) in an area of 132.78 km2.<ref name=ibge>Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística</ref> The suburban city is served by CPTM Line 7 (Ruby).

History

In February 2016, the municipality signed a Friendship Declaration with Stepanakert, the capital of the partially independent Republic of Artsakh.<ref>Template:Cite web</ref>

Media

In telecommunications, the city was served by Companhia Telefônica Brasileira until 1973, when it began to be served by Telecomunicações de São Paulo.<ref>Template:Cite web</ref> In July 1998, this company was acquired by Telefónica, which adopted the Vivo brand in 2012.<ref name=":vivo" />

The company is currently an operator of cell phones, fixed lines, internet (fiber optics/4G) and television (satellite and cable).<ref name=":vivo">Template:Cite web</ref>
