John Brown (bridge)

He was the winner of the National Pairs, Northern Area in 1952.<ref name=Frey49/> His best-known book is Winning Defence (1952) which has been regarded as making a "major contribution to the technical development of the game".<ref>Frey (1967) p.669.</ref><ref>The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge (OEB), 6th edition, in its Bibliography, Section M, gives it the evaluative rating: making a "major contribution to the technical development of the game". The OEB 5th edition (1994), Bibliography Section D cites Winning Defence as "mandatory for a modern technical bridge library".</ref> He was a contributor to many periodicals.<ref>Frey (1964), p.53.</ref>
