History

Lavigny is first mentioned in 1145 as Lauiniaco.<ref name=HDS/>

Geography

Lavigny has an area, Template:As of, of Template:Convert. Of this area, Template:Convert or 81.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while Template:Convert or 5.0% is forested. Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.3% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 6.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.5%. while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 1.3%. Out of the forested land, 3.5% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.5% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 60.3% is used for growing crops and 3.0% is pastures, while 17.8% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.<ref name=BFS_land/>

The municipality is located on the vineyard covered hills above Lake Geneva.

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SP which received 18.99% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (18.71%), the SVP (18.68%) and the Green Party (12.95%). Of the rest of the population, there were 10 members of an Orthodox church (or about 1.43% of the population), and there were 170 individuals (or about 24.25% of the population) who belonged to another Christian church. There were 12 (or about 1.71% of the population) who were Islamic. Education

In Lavigny about 214 or (30.5%) of the population have completed non-mandatory upper secondary education, and 109 or (15.5%) have completed additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule). In the 2009/2010 school year there were a total of 121 students in the Lavigny school district.
