It is in the Mount Thielsen Wilderness of the Umpqua National Forest, about Template:Convert west of the community of Chemult.<ref name="DeLorme">Template:Cite book</ref>

The lake, at Template:Convert above sea level,<ref name="gnis">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> is the source of the North Umpqua River.<ref name="BLM">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> The eastern terminus of the Template:Convert North Umpqua Trail, which follows the river, is at Maidu Lake.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> A Template:Convert connecting trail continues east, intersecting the Pacific Crest Trail between Maidu Lake and Miller Lake.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref>

Maidu Lake supports brook trout ranging in size to upwards of Template:Convert. The lake is periodically re-stocked by volunteers, who bring in hatchery fingerlings by horseback.<ref name="Sheehan">Template:Cite book</ref>
