As of the census<ref name="GR2" /> of 2000, there were 579 people, 207 households, and 148 families residing in the town. The population density was Template:Convert. There were 249 housing units at an average density of Template:Convert. The racial makeup of the town was 76.86% African American,22.45% White, 0.35% Native American, 0.35% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 207 households, out of which 37.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.7% were married couples living together, 30.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.37.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 34.0% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older.
