Oberdorf, Nidwalden

Oberdorf is a municipality in the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland. It consists of the villages and hamlets of Wil, Ennerberg, Waltersberg, Büren nid dem Bach and Niederrickenbach.

The Benedictine convent of Maria-Rickenbach is located within the municipality, next to the hamlet of Niederrickenbach. The convent lies at an altitude of Template:Convert and is accessible by cable car.

History

Oberdorf is first mentioned in 1199 as Obirndorf. In 1275 it was mentioned as Oberndorf.<ref name=HDS/>

Oberdorf has an area, Template:As of, of Template:Convert. Of this area, 53% is used for agricultural purposes, while 38.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).<ref name=SFSO/>

The municipality is located near and above the municipality of Stans. It consists of the villages and hamlets which are located above Stans (the so-called Upper village or in German Obere Dorf), which include Wil, Ennerberg and Waltersberg. Additionally the hamlets of Büren (nid dem Bach) and Niederrickenbach are included in the municipality.

Demographics

Most of the population (Template:As of) speaks German (95.2%), with Albanian being second most common ( 0.8%) and English being third ( 0.7%).<ref name=SFSO>Swiss Federal Statistical Office accessed 04-Sep-2009</ref> Template:As of the gender distribution of the population was 50.3% male and 49.7% female.

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the FDP which received 90.8% of the vote. Most of the rest of the votes went to small right-wing parties (8.6%).<ref name=SFSO/>

In Oberdorf about 70.6% of the population (between age 25–64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).<ref name=SFSO/>

Oberdorf has an unemployment rate of 1.09%. Template:As of, there were 214 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 77 businesses involved in this sector. 530 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 35 businesses in this sector. 252 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 40 businesses in this sector.<ref name=SFSO/>

Sights

The main sight of Oberdorf is the pilgrimage chapel Niederrickenbach.
