Genera

The World Register of Marine Species lists these 23 genera:<ref name=WoRMS>Template:Cite WoRMS</ref>

Several undescribed species are known, such as the white V octopus which may or may not be placed in the genus Thaumoctopus.<ref name="Phylo">Template:Cite journal</ref> Two fossil genera are also known: Styletoctopus from the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) of the Sannine Formation in Lebanon, and Bolcaoctopus from the Early Eocene (Ypresian) of Monte Bolca, Italy.<ref>Template:Cite journal</ref>
