The population is 10,949 (2020 est.) in an area of Template:Cvt.<ref>Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística</ref> The elevation is 486 m. It was founded by Luiz de Souza Leão in 1934.
In the 1970s the county was called "Capital of the Coffee" because there were 12,500,000 coffee plants. But in 1975 a frost destroyed most of them. In spite of this, coffee is still important for the local economy, along with sugar cane and corn.

In telecommunications, the city was served by Telecomunicações de São Paulo.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> In July 1998, this company was acquired by Telefónica, which adopted the Vivo brand in 2012. The company is currently an operator of cell phones, fixed lines, internet (fiber optics/4G) and television (satellite and cable).<ref name=":vivo">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref>
