Life and work

Stuart lived in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s,<ref name="lui">"Les filles vues par… Roy Stuart", Lui. Template:In lang Accessed July 29, 2014.</ref> working as an actor<ref name="bowman-salon" /> ("his only role of interest was a bit part in The Godfather Part II, playing an American soldier back from World War II"),<ref name="bowman-salon" /> musician and in a colour photo lab.<ref name="liberation" />

He moved to London where he became a photographer<ref name="liberation" /> and began taking erotic photographs.<ref name="bowman-salon" /> His work blends glamour photography and contemporary art<ref name="gq" /> with an emphasis on female models<ref name="arte" /> and BDSM aesthetics. His first three volumes of photography sold 250,000 copies.<ref name="liberation" /><ref name="gq" /> He later moved to Paris.<ref name="bowman-salon" />

Philippe Garnier, writing in Libération in 2002 said of Stuart's publications by Taschen, "Roy Stuart is quickly becoming a locomotive for this atypical editor."<ref group="n">The original in French is "Roy Stuart est bien vite devenu une locomotive pour cet éditeur atypique"</ref><ref name="liberation" />
