The Department of Fun is dedicated to providing the Wikipedia community, both young and old editors, with humour to encourage them to stay at Wikipedia, indirectly improving the encyclopedia. Below, you can find links to fun pages or fun things to do, other Wikipedian Associations, and a list of members who help with the creation and upkeep of entertaining or fun pages.

Please, if you have ideas for activities or competitions, do not hesitate to post them to the discussion page or join the Department of Fun. And above all, enjoy yourself! No ifs, whats or buts.

Update 2020... Just for clarity, let it be hereby known that Deltabeignet's Millard Fillmore post was archived in December of 2016 to this location, where it is found not under the subsection "homunculus," but instead under the subsection "sock." Cellodont (talk) 15:33, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

  • A template would be cool. A template that you could leave on a user talk page before your sig that said something to the effect of "the Wikipedia Department of Fun has been here." (Obviously more creative, I just can't think of anything right now). That way if I left a message with someone in the name of fun I could tag it with that template too. You know, so they know who's responsible for spreading the fun. Any takers for this fun assignment?A mcmurray 20:57, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Some people like having arguments, whether they do them respectfully or not, its good to get your opinion out. The Department of Fun should have a page designed for debating, maybe like Wikipedia:Department of Fun/Debate Page or something similar

Someone can state/edit in their opinion about something, being entertainment, history, hopefully not politics, etc. and someone can reply their argument back, and they can go at it. It'd be fun for the debaters, and fun for people observing, either a civil argument or a nonsense spiral. I just came up with this now. Le Panini (Talk tome?) 14:21, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

  • Wikipedia:Contests (article-writing and other kinds) are another fun thing to do, all of which encourage users to make contributions.
  • WikiCup, The WikiCup is a championship which takes place every year on Wikipedia. The cup is played and won by skill of editing, in which the purpose of the cup is to encourage mainspace editing and to make editing fun here on Wikipedia. Entry is available for any registered user; experience doesn't matter.
  • Last topic pool, a pool for guessing what the topic of the last article created on Wikipedia may be, and other pools.

Songs, poems and other literary fun

While Meta:Hotel Wikipedia is the official theme song, there's no reason not to make up your own songs. Since it has been recognized that the Wikiholic in particular needs lots of ways to create their own culture or at least encounter their own despair, we probably needs lots more songs on the Wikisong list. Don't worry! You don't have to write music, just rip off a tune everyone knows and change the lyrics, marking it TTTO for "to the tune of" the victimized song.

These songs can be sung in public, but, that may only compound your problem. Just humming a few bars of the song can remind people of the Wikipedia-themed lyrics and create yet more in-jokes that will further isolate you from non-Wikipedian human contact. Which we encourage.

There also exists (as of 20 March 2011) a poem and a soliloquy about Wikipedia at Wikipedia:Poems about Wikipedia.
