Industrial Wittenoom 2,000+ 1940s–1960s Environmental and public health catastrophe. It involved the mining of blue asbestos at Wittenoom Gorge from the 1940s to the 1960s. Due to inadequate safety measures, workers and residents were exposed to deadly asbestos fibers, leading to widespread cases of asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. It is known as the worst industrial catastrophe in Australian history.
